As members of the household of God, we exist to bring glory to God and exalt His Name as we seek to know Him, demonstrated through our faith, hope, and love. As disciples of Christ having attained righteousness through faith, we seek to gain a true knowledge of God in all spiritual wisdom and understanding and press on to maturity found in the fullness of Christ as we are conformed into His image, offering our lives to our Lord and Savior.
We are joined together by His Spirit in unity with love toward one another, and devoted to scripture, fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer, living unselfish and sacrificial lives, and putting other’s interests above our own. We meet together regularly as a community of believers for the purpose of edifying, exhorting, equipping, and building one another up in love.
Our lives bear witness of our transformation, having become dead to sin and alive in Christ, and bearing fruit through good works as evidence of God’s love and grace upon our lives as we go out into the world proclaiming God’s truth and making disciples.
It seems that today’s church has lost its Biblical family focus. We see this in the fact that divorce rates within the church are no different than the rest of society and why many of today’s young adults are leaving the church even after being raised in Christian households. Paul’s emphasis and use of metaphors around households brings to light how he viewed his job description to “bring to light what is the administration of the mystery” and that this should be our emphasis as well. It also highlights that we should focus our ministries around strengthening families as the core unit of the church. As Chrysostom put it, “a household is a little church,”, and correspondingly “a church is a large household.” For many believers, the family is their primary field of ministry and where they most often interact within the community of other believers. By realigning the focus of the church back to families and structuring our ministries around equipping members of the church to live in the same manner, we can regain the biblical focus for the ministry of the church.
